KAREL STULENS
(Genk, *1997), I am a Belgium-based composer of contemporary music.
After studying classical guitar and composition at the art school Musart, located in Kiewit, I continued my studies in composition at the Ghent Conservatory (*2015) with Dr. Daan Janssens.
I had the chance to work with Nemø Ensemble, Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, The New What Now Collective, En Avant Mars-festival etc... as well as individual musicians.
I took part in masterclasses by a.o.: Lisa Streich, Eric Wubbles, Frederik Neyrinck, Ansgar Beste etc...
In the summer of 2018, I was an active student at the Darmstadt Summer School. Lessons I took part in were given by Johannes Kreidler, Steve Daverson, Lucia Ronchetti, Marco Ciciliani etc…

Last year I was selected as winning composer for the first edition of the SOV Composer’s academy, a new project from Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen. For them I have written my first orchestral piece EXPIRED – miniature for orchestra.
As conductor and composer I am connected to Nemø Ensemble.

EXPIRED - MINIATURE FOR ORCHESTRA (2018)
Program note:
EXPIRED is a first attempt towards a personal research in the relevance of tradition and traditional forms in our contemporary, musical climate.
The piece is a small, abstract miniature which functions as a dialogue between Beethoven’s infamous ninth symphony and the personal questions I dealt with about writing an orchestra piece in 2018.
EXPIRED was written for the Symphonic orchestra of Flanders (Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen) as part of their Tripel Beethoven concert tour (2018)
